turn off instant search, click off the searchbar, click a few onscreen notes using the mouse, then start typing notes with the keyboard. worked for me.

No, AFAIK. Just qwerty and mouse input. It's not too bad, playing it on the keyboard once you get the hang of the layout. Before I got a USB/MIDI controller I used to play music on my keyboard all the time.
