How's it going folks.

I wanted to start a thread on my take on how I create kits in LSDJ and allow a thread for those who also make kits to provide their input, tips and tricks.

There is a youtube video with 2xAA showing the process on making kits and little-scale has a blog post on how he makes kits.

My method:
Software - Audacity (free program)

1. Load sample.
2. Set to 11,468 Project Rate (Hz). [input by AWESOMECAT]
3. Set audio track to mono.
4. Cut silence before and after sample. (Keep in mind that the sample is limited to 2 seconds in length)
5. Apply Compressor Filter.
(5a) I like to add an Amplify Filter that clips a little to increase the volume. Completely optional.
6. Apply Lowpass Filter with cut off frequency at 5,734 Hz. [input by AWESOMECAT]
7. Export as "Other Uncompressed Files" -> Options -> WAV (Microsoft) + Unsigned 8 bit PCM

Currently working on kits with samples taken from a Texas Instruments Speak & Read.

My mix of kits both personally made and hand picked are available via my Dropbox!

I've recently made a lot of speak and spell kits. I'll upload them when I have the time.

I mostly follows little-scale tutorial for the kits I am doing right now !!!
I suggest you to check out LSDSNG. This is a place to store and share your lsdj songs and kits ! smile http://lsdsng.com

I did 3 kits for now...
-My favorite break kits on mpc taken from VEXST on freesounds.com
http://lsdsng.com/node/593
-2 other kits are some classic Jungle vox I found !!!

Does anyone have any tips on how to lessen the "hiss" in vocal samples?

I've tried a couple of different frequency cut offs with low and high pass filters and can't seem to get it right...

Its this:
2. Set to 44100 Project Rate (Hz)

Set the project rate to the gameboys sample rate (8192Hz), after doing an eq of all frequencies about this point and it maximize the volume as much as possible. triming the silent parts should help make any noise elftover as much as possible.

IIRC the sample rate for the wave channel is 11,468 Hz, and a lot of the hiss comes from artifacts caused by frequencies above the Nyquist frequency (which in this case is 5,734 Hz [sample rate divided by 2]). I get around this by running every sample I'm turning into a kit through a lowpass filter with the cutoff frequency at 5734 Hz. I've found it to make a pretty good difference.

EDIT: I was wrong. Sample rate (according to the LSDJ manual) is 11,468 Hz instead of 11,478 Hz like I originally posted. This means that the Nyquist frequency is 5,734 Hz and not 5,739 Hz.

I need help man, I have a lot of samples and Audacity, and everything is working good, but my problem is when I clic on the sample in LSDpatcher19 it sounds ugly, at the end in most samples. I don't know where to edit or modify in Audacity, I want to preserve the whole sample but most of them have out-fading, in other words they are silenced gradually at the end, then, I don't want to cut that fading part but it sounds bad, and the yellow graph in lsdpatcher shows a small square waves. I guess I need to remove/delete/edit those square waves.

I suggest to you to check out my kit here:

The 3 last samples sound bad at the end.

In my experience there is always that click in longer samples when played inside the patcher only. When the kit is loaded into lsdj and played back on the gameboy there is no noticeable click.

I've got samples I've been unable to patch into kit files due to my computer being absolute shit, here they are: https://www.dropbox.com/s/yekf2bkknd7av … ogress.rar

Some still need chopping up to be short enough for lsdj.

A quick kit I threw together that I did a few weeks ago. (It isn't perfect and the timing is off, I did this to see what it would sound like)

Each sample is closer to 4 seconds than the allotted 2 second limit.

My method to do this was to speed up the audio sample in audacity by 2x then play the kit back in LSDJ at 0.5 speed. That is one way to get around the kit limitations in longer samples.

Totally fucking doing this with scream/roar samples. Terrifying.

To be more clear with making longer samples:

-If you have a really long sample, do all of your adjustments such as normalize, compressor, changing sample rate, etc. first.
-Select the section you want to sample (keep it just under 4 seconds if anything).
-Cut it.
-Open up a new audacity window.
-Paste it.
-Run a Change Speed filter and make the sample twice as fast. This will bring it down to under 2 seconds.
-Save the file.
-Upload the file onto the LSDJ Patcher.
-Save it as a kit or export as a GB ROM.
-Load it up to LSDJ and place the sample kit into the WAV channel.
-Adjust the kit instrument so that the speed will run at 0.5 rate.
-You now have a kit that plays longer than 2 seconds in LSDJ.

Repeat until really long sample is complete.

It is very tedious, but if you really want to use a particular custom kit, you have to put in the mind numbing work. Beer usually helps.

Creating a few guitar samples via Jam Sessions 2 on the DS, will update if the samples come out well.
