Hi chipmusic!

My name is hobbes182, I have always been a huge fan of chipmusic but I have never created any music myself. I have finally decided to jump in. I have done some research into nanoloop and LSDJ. from what i can gather nanoloop has less of a learning curve.

I was thinking about starting with nanoloop, I have also heard that nanoloop lends itself more to jam sessions.

Any advice you guys have would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

I wrote 2 articles about both programs that you should take a look at:

LSDj: http://chiptuneswin.com/blog/wsiu-little-sound-dj-lsdj/
Nanoloop 2: http://chiptuneswin.com/blog/wsiu-nanoloop-2-x/

Since writing the NL2 article, I've tried a bit of NL1 and it's very good, though I much prefer the way LSDj handles the programming better. Mono has yet to arrive in the mail for me, but it looks really good.

imho, LSDj > Nanoloop for going apeshit on the hardware, but Nanoloop > LSDj if you want to just get started and fuck around.

hello,

if you're interested in nanoloop but can't afford at the moment the cartridge, there is also an official Android app which should work similar to the GBA version, at a fair price:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta … m.nanoloop
(I haven't purchased it yet but it looks interesting and I'll probably buy it)

There is also a clone for desktop PC and PSP:
http://chipmusic.org/forums/topic/13624 … oop-clone/
It works well (I still have to get used to it)

There are also other great chiptune trackers, why only use lsdj or nanoloop? Deflemask, Famitracker or Klystrack are quite easy to get started to.

I've made a little comparison of some of my favorite trackers there (there are also URL to the trackers' homepages): http://garvalf.online.fr/index.php?page … s_trackers

the android version has very little in common with the GBA version..
the nanoloop website does have have demo roms of both current NL1 and NL2 carts though, so you can try them out in an emulator (or on a flash cart if you happen to have one)

so is it closer to nanoloop 1 on gameboy? I saw the android version could do FM, like nanoloop on GBA, that's the reason why I assumed they were similar.

its got little in common with either.. if anything, it was closer to nanoloop 2.01-2.1... most parameters are edited on a per-channel basis, not a per-step basis, so you're essentially limited to one instrument per channel instead of being able to have kick drum and basslines on the same channel as one is used to with most chip software and hardware

The workflow of the android/ios version is good. Not as good as gba but good.
The sound quality is cleaner than gba, I like the two kind of sound, but gba as more character.
Iphone/Android definitely miss :
- /2 /4 /8 timedivision
- full parameter change by step, here you can tweak them, but not fully change them which is good but not great ;
- midi out/in sync

Hope one day Oliver will implement this.

Hehe sorry about that, it completely slipped my mind.

Thanks for the reply guys! I am completely open to trying any chip creator. it does not have to be nano or lsdj big_smile

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, you guys rock.

Hopefully, I can share some music soon! Can't wait to get started!
