A gray world of dread

http://woolyss.com/ ?

It has a really nicely organized Tracker-by-OS-or-System list:
http://woolyss.com/tracking-trackers.php
http://woolyss.com/chipmusic-chiptrackers.php

There's also rather comprehensive VSTi list.
http://woolyss.com/chipmusic-plugins.php

Maybe it would make more sense to just link that page instead of cluttering an introductory thread like this with a link collection and focus on Q/A stuff... dunno

Here's the link for the thread with sample resources

Awesome guide, man!
I'd just like to add that you can always record chiptune hardware and run it through a DAW, mpc, LGPT, or other sampler to get extra gritty chips.

Heh, me, I'm new to the scene, and STILL  can't figure out heads or tails of trackers... I'm down to using Guitar Pro 5 to make a midi, loading it into GXSCC, exporting the wav from there, and converting into an mp3...

You're doing it wrong. If you can make something in GP5, you can figure trackers easily then. Is just the same, but with letters and numbers instead of a tab. The time is the same, if you know time.

I never looked at it that way, tbh...

I'm extremely new at this. (By this I mean a year or two, picking up and dropping my handhelds for musical purposes every once in a while)

But trackers aren't my thing. I keep going back to my bought copy of lsdj, the manual, trying something out, unhappy with it, reading a million how-to's and anything else I can get my eyes on about it, and trying again.

I just can't get into it. It's not fun. It's, just, eh. I have fun using audacity, mixing, recording, changing pitch, blowing garbled noise into the crappy mic and applying a million filters just for kicks. I have fun playing with trippyH, DS-10, M01, MuddyGB, pixelh8's music tech, etc, and just piecing it together in haphazard ways or as I originally thought it out in my head.

I could be wrong, and trackers are the way to go, but just for my stubborn head; what are some non-tracker options? Besides a DAW, of course.

you already listed some non-tracker options but let's go

nanoloop isn't a tracker
PX TONE isn't a tracker
mario paint isn't a tracker
there's lots of sheet-music arrangey things for old computers that aren't trackers
you could use a sheet-music arrangey thing for a modern computer with a MIDI SYNTH or a MIDI GAMEBOY and that wouldn't be a tracker
you could play a keyboard on a chip sound and that wouldn't be a tracker
you could connect your keyboard to a MIDI GAMEBOY/MIDI C64/ MIDI SPECTRUM/MIDI etc and that wouldn't be tracker
you could sample some chip noises and arrange them in an audio editor and that wouldn't be a tracker
you could combine any of the above and it still wouldn't be a tracker

try schismtracker

Sheet-music arrangey thing?

Thanks, never heard of px tone, nor gave nanoloop a real glance thinking it was a tracker.

Lol, my options are connect something to something else with midi then?

Think Finale or MuseScore. Sheet-music arrangey thingies wink

Try any MIDI sequencer. Most DAWs are decended from sequencers. Why do you want to avoid them? You are already working with Audacity, right? It is an obvious progression.

If you're looking to use a program, I'd reccomend using some vsti. files from tweakbench. Toad and Peach are professionally sampled instruments from Mario. As well as the Triforce synth, which offers a wide range of customizable Square, Triangle, and Sine waves. I've also been using instruments and effects from DARKWARE. The hentai themed skins can be somewhat obnoxious (unless that's what you love.) But, the sounds are very good, and most of them are free (as well as those from tweakbench.)

I hope I helped!

P.S. I'm not sure how new you are, but, if you're just getting into the realm of programming. I'd like to also recommend Reaper as a program; you'll need to download ASIO4ALL.
