Have you actually made any "90s Big Beat like music with modern VSTis and chipmusic samples" yet?

yeah it's a fun creative challenge with limitations and all that. but i've found i actually want to make music that appeals to a wider audience. which probably seems contradictory given that chip music is somewhat niche. but people my age are familiar with game boys and 80s video game sound since we grew up with all that, and nostalgia is big these days. so if the music is any good, people will be into it. it helps if they can dance to it too.

lastly it's so simple to lie in bed with a game boy and create on a whim, there's no excuse not to do it.

the great thing about LSDJ is that the way you make sounds in it is exactly the same whether you are beginner or an expert

DS supports GBA games, not GB/GBC games. EMS carts will work in GBA or GBA SP, but not GBA micro or DS.

Since Windows doesn't have bash it won't work natively, but it runs perfectly in Cygwin.

it just calls the ems-flasher binary right? guessing i may need that in the folder with the .jar and maybe the cygwin dll. i'll give it a shot when i get home and let you know

what are the chances this could be run in windows? i never got the EMS drivers to install on my win7 x64 machine for whatever reason. i use ems-flasher in cygwin with zadig libusb drivers and it works great, but a GUI would be really cool.

I've only messed around with LSDJ for a little bit on an emulator, but I know the synth instrument has a filter. Is there a way to asign an envelope to it? The main sound I'm looking for is short bass tones with quick filter evelopes.

the closest you can get is by setting the synth start cutoff low and end cutoff high with a low instrument speed value (meaning it cycles quickly through the wave frames). this may introduce some artifacts to the sound though. the other option would be setting a table to quickly switch between frames. you might have a look at the LSDJ slap bass thread for some other ideas too.

renoise is fantastic. the new instruments workflow makes sound design a dream come true. i regularly use it as a rewire slave to reaper so that i can record live audio too. best of both worlds

if you read the LSDJ manual you will find the answer you are looking for on page

i just ordered a pro sound kit from nonelectronics last week and got it within the week. sorry for your bad experience.

that's a good thought. you could even use the 6|6....2|1|1|1 groove trick for 3/4, then in the second phrase just add the H after beat 2. or if you're feeling fancy, switch to a 3/3 groove to make the whole phrase 2 beats. though i think i'd rather keep the command free from using G if I don't really need 32nd notes.
