So I have finally turned on my 1040ste last night. I have decided I would like to get more savvy with it. I have maxymizer ready to rock, and works great, but I would like some other basic knowledge as well. Here goes the neighborhood:

I know nothing of 1040STE operation systems. I take it I want GEM ? GEM is just a graphical interface for TOS ? How does one acquire the latest and best of these? Is it available with software or is it on chips, like the Amigas ?

Did the all 1040STE ship from the factory with 4MB of ram? Or is that just the max it takes? I didn't mess around in the OS at all to see the specs, but will today when I get out of work... Or if you want to help me out ahead of time, where can I go in the OS to see all the specs of the machine ??

I see all these fancy pants CF card reader devices (internal and external) for Amigas where you can run the whole OS off of a CF card. I imaganie that would be ideal since the hard drive is very old now. I couldn't seem to find one that is made for the Atari ST models, and keep in mind I am not some electronics mastermind, so the DIY ones would not be a good option for me. I would like to get the IDE plug n play ones.

I am aware of this one: http://afs.atari.org/satandisk.htm

But uses external power? Is that how they all will need to be run for the ST's?? And it looks to external, which I would prefer internal.

Lastly, I came across this thread that seems to have mega links and resources pertaining to all things STE.. Which I will study much further.

Thanks guys for any info your atari peeps can provide!!! smile

You could try SYSINFO.PRG to check your current specs:
https://sites.google.com/site/stessenti … ls/sysinfo

The latest TOS for ST/E is version 2.06 and it comes in ROM chips. There are also other operating systems, mainly interesting for applications/multitasking. For just using maxymiser or other chip editors any TOS version and also 1 MB RAM should do great. BTW, you will find comprehensive answers on most technical aspects in www.atari-forum.com. It is the biggest English speaking Atari forum and many of your questions should have been discussed there already. So just digg around a bit there maybe. Have fun smile

Yes thanks that looks like some good info..

And my favorite section from that website was if Y2K would affect my Atari.

CARL ON ST !!! yikes Awesome !!!
Yup 4MB is the max you can put in a STe !
Be sure to check out trackers like XLR8, TripleX and my little favorite, Musicmon 2.5e !!!
Satandisk/Ultrasatan are cool but reaaaaally expensive (around 150$ for it + 50$ for HDDriver if you want TOS/DOS partitions on your SD card !!!) and yeah the are external and need external power ! (and cant be used in Atari Falcon) :S

Yea! Im gonna try !!! heh

But yikes that is rather expensive. Well, the reason I like Maxy because of the 3 regular channels and 2 sample channels.. That is a nice combo. Unless those trackers you mentioned have more channel support with that same idea? I like the idea of having synthesis and sample in one though.

I was reccommended to stay away from atari-forum, due to it being less informative and a hassle than it is helpful.

I ended up snagging a 1040STE and a regular 1040ST with color monitor within a couple days of each other on ebay.. this was about 2 years ago though.. thats how long it has been sitting around for untouched ha.

Would you be interested in a 1040ST ? i think its a 1040STF, either way I would like to sell it.

Yisss!!! I'm still using floppies on my STe's but I'm looking more and more into buying an HxC floppy emulator since my disks keep corrupting http://hxc2001.free.fr/floppy_drive_emulator/. Sadly the STe doesn't have onboard IDE so any sort of CF card integration isn't easy.

Check maxYMiser too, it seems to make a lot more sense to me than MusicMon.

O2star: strange, I never noticed. It's a good library when it comes to all the ST tech-stuff however, so no need to register wink

Quite surprisingly lately, this ST2SD solution appeared: http://shop.inventronik.de/store/11 working on Falcon & ST.
