geometric explosions like this in islamic artwork have always been so interesting to me (check out the inlay on the taj mahal, for another example, and a long way from zellij in morocco.  it features the flowers which were described in heaven, and geometry).  having a prohibition within the religion on the human form in art really resulted in amazing workarounds to this.
