I'm trying to figure out an effective way at separating different parts of music i.e. the drums from the guitar and the vocal etc.

I've heard spear is a good program for this and have tried it out but it's just a little shaky for me.

Do you any of you have an experience with this?

Do you mean that you have stereo and you just want to get vocals or drums out? Gates, filters, deliberately dropping L or R channels, and phase canceling are all possibilities.

You mean you recorded everything together in one track and now you want to separate stuff? This is theoretically possible using spectral editing, but in many cases your recording will be much too dirty for it to be practically possible.

More like just taking vocals off of a track and leaving the instrumental.

well there is a whole big feature about doing exactly that in this month's computer music magazine

i have nothing against sharing it with you EXCEPT i don't have a scanner and i'm not going to type it all in. so i guess you'll have to buy the magazine

Or you could buy the magazine since it costs less, I would assume.

maybe i should get the whole article tattooed on my body and then walk from here to your house barefoot so you can read it

maybe that'd be the easiest way of you reading the article

Vocal removing is a phase cancellation trick. http://vocalremover.codeplex.com/

easier than manual phase cancelation is a mid/side plugin like the one chunter linked. the best one i know is voxengo MSED

http://www.voxengo.com/product/msed/

this doesn't work on most modern songs though, where everything is centred and the only stereo width comes from an artifically wide reverb

works better on old songs when they only just discovered stereo and all they knew how to do was pan things
