Proof of concept (2 x ZX Spectrum: chiptune/digi)

By YERZMYEY on Mar 9, 2013 6:37 pm

This is really a proof of concept, I made for the idea of playing simultaneously two ZX Spectrum computers, where one is playing chiptune music and the second one is playing digital music (6 channels in total).
I was wondering if it keeps tempo properly - and it appeared it works OK.
I don't know if it sounds very well, but at least sounds kind of interesting, I'd say.

One Spectrum is playing a chiptune part from ZX SoundTracker 1.1.
The second Spectrum is playing a 3-channels 4-bit digi-music from SampleTracker 2.1.

ZX Spectrum is a computer from 1982 year.
CPU speed: 3,5 Mhz.
RAM: 48Kb.

AY-interface contains General Instrument AY-3-8910 chip or ym2149 chip (depending on model. A difference in sound is minimal).

Lazerbeat: thx man. smile Well, yes - and the most simple way is to record two halves and then play together, if You have only one Spectrum. That was the purpose of experiment, You know: do both trackers keep tempo.
Greetz!

Great stuff, how did you sync the machines? just beatmatching?

Jellica: thanks man.
Well, if it goes from the same program/engine, then it should keep proper tempo.
So it would work from the hardware.
However not necessarily at a concert (synchro problems).
However while recording - You could record all parts separately and then synchronize them on CoolEdit or other sample-editor.

this is awsome, i'm having a lot of fun using a set up for 3 c64s using goattracker, some code and emulators. i dont think it would ever work on real hardware though.

Thx a lot guyz. wink

Dude. That was incredible.

Beautiful

arrrghhh i keep forgetting that the comment section doesnt render the Plus sign

That song is gold smile Also, good job on discovering this possibility. Now how about 3 Spectrums   studio fx?

Wow, that sounds incredible!
The experiment was a success!!!

Mind = blown
