Cheese - First attempt at something not shit

By GoingHam on May 13, 2012 10:06 am

The first thing I ever recorded.
The electric hum is from a shitty 3.5mm cable.
Entire song is composed of 4 chains.

I like the melody and the chords are really nice, but it just sounds very empty.  Insubstantial.  I'd say you definitely succeeded in making something "not shit", because it's appealing to the ears and has a nice flow to it.  If you were purposefully aiming to have a very empty sort of sound, then you did just fine and you can call it a day, but this being your first recorded piece I'm going to criticize anyways:

As I understand it you want to always be aiming to create a "full" sound, one that employs the greatest range of pitch without making the individual elements clash with each other.  Like I said, you nailed the higher range - I take it this was made in LSDJ?  You've got both pulse waves doing some  really neat stuff, but I'm barely hearing the wav channel.  Using it for a bassline or  to otherwise accent the piece besides just using it for the kicks goes a long way towards making it feel less empty.

That said, I'd love to see a version of this song that utilized a few more of the available elements, it's a good start.
