The Skill (Pseudo 1bit)

First of all, this is in a style totally different from what I usually make, but I felt like making something really gritty and determined.  Well, maybe not totally different, my melodic tendencies are still here just grittier. Made with 3 x PC Speaker channels and sampled Phaser 1 digital drums. Obviously the result is not 1bit music, but it is made wholly from 1bit sources (at least I think PC Speaker is 1bit). Enjoy.

No, I haven't tried that out Shiru, thanks a lot for the link. I'm going to experiment with it, looks very cool. And I didn't know that about the Phaser 1 drums, nice trivia. Thanks for the tip Shiru.

fluidvolt, did you tried Nautilus? It is interesting 1-bit VSTi synth too, which also supports sampled drums.

Phaser1's drums are actually made in Vortex Tracker II with high framerate (200hz or so), and then downsampled to 1-bit. You can get similar results if you make drums in VT or other chip crosstracker, and load them into Nautulus.

Thanks guys! gyms: Good idea! That sounds like it's worth a try, I'll check it out and see how it sounds.  irrlichtproject: No, nothing that complicated... I used a VSTi plugin called JBM 61h which emulates a PC Speaker. I'll have to check out "Music Construction Set" sometime, sounds like it could be fun.

interesting experiment! also how did you get those timbres, did you programm your own pc speaker routine for it or did you use qbasic or something? btw there's also "Music Construction Set" for squeezing real polyphony from the pc speaker.

oh hey, just had an idea that might be worth trying out with this setup:

one of the behaviors of the phaser 1 engine is for the kick-ish sounds in the drums to temporarily cut off the other voices. i bet you could accomplish something similar with sidechain compression. just throw compressors on the three pc speaker tracks and sidechain them to the output of the kick levels. then just mess around with the attack and release settings to get a smooth, but snappy cutoff when the kick sounds off.

aw snap, my bad. didn't read the description correctly. all the instruments are pc speaker, just the drums are phaser 1 sampled, ok...got it, heh

man, nice theme and great atmosphere as always. which instrument here is the pc speaker?
