Oh yea, sorry. you have to unzip into a folder call"DISK 1" and install from there.

Change the view to 'event list', most DAWs have that.

I hate using the mouse for making MIDI which is what most DAWs force you to do; put little squares on lines.

Another really nice tool I use only for composing is iSequence for the iPad. Its a roland-like interface where notes go left to right and you just tap them in place. I think I can compose fastest on iSequence but it's lack of time signatures/tempo changes and dotted notes makes it kind of limiting, but it's fine for making some 4/4 type stuff.

Should be able with most DAWs to set MS synth for the output, but you may want to setup Midi Yoke and MidiOx also. Midi yoke is Virtual cables between software and MidiOx is a great helper app to filter and route midi streams, it adds alot of control to your setup. For instance: routing a midi interface IN to a Sound Font soundcard synth or routing a Keyboard midi IN to a midi OUT and a DAW or the output of a soft seq to a DAW.
  For just a standalone midi seq, there are lots of old apps. Just recently found a legal and free DL for Cakewalk 3 (strictly midi).

  There is another seq you may want to check Seq24, http://www.filter24.org/seq24/
a cross platform midi sequencer that is aimed at live performance. It is loop based as opposed to the more standard piano roll.  More along the lines of LSDJ in a way or more like a hardware seq..

(Or just record it that way in the first place.)

I would invest in some sort of MIDI interface if you don't have one so you can compose with it.  I use a Roland Um-one.
