Should I invest in a Chip Maestro?]]> $4011 is the delta counter, iirc?  If that's true, it means that you can use that to do some (very basic, not super deep) volume control of the triangle channel (along with the noise channel)

It does exactly what it's told. No more, no less. Herr prof is right, it's best to think of it as a synth module. Per midi composition, I really enjoy writing on a piano roll, plus file management is super easy. A big part of the equation is the sequencer used with it. If one has a sequencer they like, the midines is a great tool. Nothing but praise from me. The nes needs to be modded though, the hum is kinda a creativity killer, plus volume control for the triangle channel would be sweeet.

Also you can get broken chords to run at any speed you want if you use a free flowing midi arp like the one in ableton, rather than being constrained to the usual intervals like

Should I invest in a Chip Maestro?]]> Midines' modulation hack, DPCM speed and "wave traveller" are actually really powerful. They're not easy to mimic in Famitracker. However, you're losing a lot of your fast tracker-style effects.

That said, the trade-off allows for a very different sort of NES sound than you might be used to. Warmer and fatter bass-lines and aggressive and resonant pulse channels can be really neat. Without the power of fast effects you might want to pair it with something else like a Commodore 64 or Game Boy.

Edit: The key to midines is digging into the MIDI CCs.

Live Animals does pretty well with minimal commands, it all depends on what you want to do with your music.
