Inside you'll usually find literally dozens of different colors of thin-gauge stranded-core wire. Stranded is better than solid-core for this type of stuff IMO. If the wires don't all have unique colors, they'll at least have unique markings, like the stripes on Cat5/6 wiring.

It's thin and there is a lot of it, so it will probably last a while. If you have decent wire strippers it's pretty easy to strip as well.
