I find that the best way to avoid repeating things is to force yourself to write new patterns, and rather than just looping a pattern that you've already written, re-write the pattern so that it builds with the other instruments. Even copying patterns and then changing them to add fills and slightly different parts can make a track sound very different. Using fills is an especially handy trick that keeps a track moving along, so keep that in mind! Hope that helps!
