That outline, although having no  use able pixels is still inverted. The ic is a simple hex inverter, often using an xor chip. These can be found anywhere from eBay, mouser, digikey or even your local radio shack.

I think it looks amazing and clear. I haven't been able to see this exact backlight anywhere. It seems to have a green outer edge.

Can anyone shed any light on this matter (pun intended)?
