If you doing this at certain rate, you control speed of the movement, and height of 'tone' it produces. You can do similar things with some other devices with step motors, like printers and scanners, but they usually aren't provide direct control on the step motor, so you would need some extra hardware, and for a floppy drive there is everything that needed in a PC.
