I can't find the exact model you mentioned but looking on the detailed specs for two other 1800 series laptops they both use variants of something called an "AK4543 Codec Chip" which doesnt look very opl3 to me unfortunately. That being said, toshibas website it most helpful and lists the actual sound chipset on the few machines I looked at.

Back in the day it meant it had an OPL3 chip, but I don't know about that in LAPTOPS, I always had desktops with SB compatible, OPL3 packing soundcards.

"SoundBlaster Pro compatible" is that a good sign, or does compatible mean it won't be an actual opl3?
