also, i empathize with you bringing up the chiptheft issue. @DaPantz: i think it's a very interesting idea to locate the cohesion of the chiptune community partly in its resistance to chiptheft, and in its attempts to overcome it.

also, here's a link to a not-so-brief history of chiptunes by two US scholars. it's written for an academic audience, so no lazy journalism here. i'm working on something similar for a different journal myself.

I hate hearing shitty vst redux of ffII soundtrack as much as you, but having them mentioned in the same breath isn't so outrageous.

This idea has really stuck in my head.  I noticed I've been subconsciously categorizing stuff as:

Impressionist -- the sounds are whack but the songs are perfect

Modernist -- the sounds are awesome but the songs annoying

Purist -- both are perfect and must never change

Regardless of what actual words you use I think this type of differentiation is far more useful than "fakebit", vgm, chipstyle, or what have you.
