there are a LOT of programs downloadable (the vast majority of them are free)

http://woolyss.com/chipmusic-chiptrackers.php
http://woolyss.com/tracking-trackers.php
those just scratch the surface!

obviously i can't explain to you how to use all of them, but most of them come with a manual so you should be able to read that to figure out what's going on.. and just keep trying at them until you figure them out. the more popular trackers (famitracker, milkytracker, lsdj, etc) might have video tutorials on youtube also. try a bunch of them and see which you prefer famitracker like already mentioned is a good option but it has a VERY distinctive sound and you either want that sound or you don't... same for LSDJ and many of the chip-trackers.

if you want a bit more flexibility in your sound i recommend openMPT for a beginner... also a lot of people swear by Milkytracker (although not me)
#

what am I personally using?? Schism Tracker, Goat Tracker, and Surprise Adlib Tracker 2 (adlib trackers available here: http://adlib.wave460.net/trackers.html - they run in dos or the DOSBOX emulator)...

good luck!

No one can really teach you anything it's really all about playing with the programs. How if you go the LSDJ route, which is for gameboy, there's a guy on YouTube that posts as LSDJguides and he posts instrument build and shows you a quick tip on how it can be used. Watching enough of these will help you get used to the program layout quickly. Also if you have an iPhone or iPad I think even iPods now can use it look for the LSDJ patch book. It's just a bunch of instrument builds people have made and you can use it as a way to keep track of you own builds by adding yours to the list. Again this is useful for lsdj.

As for other software I'm not to familiar with fami tracker or anything. However I know there's a little music thing in Mario paint on te SNES that is kind of fun to play with. You can did it for about 5$ and you'll need the mouse pad which cost about 10-20$ on eBay and amazon. Probably wouldn't be a bad little thing to play with to get some basic beats going.

Also there is a little mini game in te gameboy cameras called Trippy H which is kinda cool to pay with from time to time. I personally haven't found much use for it but I know some people go nuts for it....thinking About it I have quite a few gameboy cameras maybe I should sell some lol.

Hope I helped a little. This site is broken down into systems so just decide what you want to work with and go from there man. Good luck.
