How do I make chiptune in Renoise?

ryba says:
So I have tried trackers before but I always fail with learning them because I come from a modern DAW I guess.

I have reached quite a good level in my modern DAW when it comes to my other genre that I’m into.

Anyways to me Renoise looks the best so I have decided to learn it for chiptune. Only problem is I don’t know how to make the sounds at all. I have tried loading a VST but then all the effects commands doesn’t seem to work and I guess it’s because it’s a VST.

So my guess is that people that make chiptune in Renoise create the sound inside Renoise as a native sound so all the effect commands work.

Am I right? And if I am how do I make these sounds?

Thanks!

usage, designing custom roms to investigate further
and finally include a way in FMDRIVE 2612 to use it for modern music production.
All and all the YM612 EXTENDED emulation turns out to be a fantastic synth suitable for chip music
and FM nostalgic pleasure and also a powerful tool for modern production.

Fact is that the Megadrive had a very characteristic and cool sound, -much- cooler than Nintendo's
I grew up playing some great games on the genesis.
So, I thought the Genesis / Megadrive also deserves that kind of attention and its own project.

You may think, the YM2612 chip is basically another 4 Operator YAMAHA FM synth but there is more...
DAC, SSG Envelopes and Special operating MODES like CSM speech synthesis.
On top of that the SEGA had a distinctive distorted sound, more or less present, depending on revision models.
FMDRIVE add many extended features and huge user friendly GUI!

You can design a vast range of sound on top of 33000 instruments presets already available from Games ROMS.
Go further with extended controls, and even midi control a real sega genesis with a special hardware add on interface:
GENMDM designed by Little Scale.(see the thread)

DONATION start at 13 $ (10€)
Medusa 2 (VSTi for Windows)

bryc says:

Features:

- Low-bit envelopes
- LFO for pulse-width modulation, FM, and Granularity
- Vibrato
- Pitch Attack
- Arpeggiator with basic chords
- Volume keyscaler (Volume decreases with increasing pitch)
- Note glide
- Key velocity
- Pulse, Sine, Triangle, Saw, and Pseudo-Noise (NEW)
- FM Mode for Sine, Triangle and Saw (NEW)
- Granularity for Pseudo-Noise (NEW)
- Monosynth Mode (NEW)

So, here she is, in her second (actually third) incarnation. You will note that the interface hasn't changed much, but the goal was always to keep it simple. Here's a run down on the new features:

Clicking on the Medusa picture will now change the OSC mode between square, sine, triangle, saw and pseudo-noise. Each has it's individual bit-depth, based purely on what I thought sounds good (excuse my egoism here). The OSC mode also controls the attribute you change with the 'Pulse' slider / LFO.

Mode Bits Pulse effect
------------------------------
Pulse 4* Pulse Width
Sine 8 FM
Triangle 6 FM
Saw 4 FM
Noise 5* Granularity

*) The waveform is 1-bit but uses an envelope of the respective depth

The FM effect is very simple and just increases the amount of a +1 octave modulator on the carrier. It mimics the sound of a decreasing pulse width to some extend, so it goes nicely with the familiar PW modulation in pulse mode.

For the pseudo-noise mode, the Pulse slider affects granularity (how 'dense' the noise will sound). Medusa will also interpret the note input as sample rate in this mode, which means you can shade the noise higher or lower.

Finally, Medusa now has a Monosynth mode. It's activated automatically if you up the Glide slider. If you set it to a very tiny amount, the portamento isn't noticeable, and you can use her as a simple Monosynth.

Enjoy, leave a comment & suggestions!

Download:
http://www.milkcrate.com.au/ub/Medusa2.zip (1.5 MB)

Once again thanks to iLKke for the new graphical elements and little-scale for the hosting.

And a special note for ant1:
I'm really sorry the custom arp mode didn't make it in. It was glitchy as hell, it will need a lot more time to figure out how to convince SynthEdit to do this properly. Sorry

MazHoot says:
Hello,

I am making a tracker in Python, which at the end, is suppose to work on raspberry pi, and be usable with a gamepad (but also with keyboard).

The idea is to make an alternative of LGPT, maybe not as good as (because LGPT is soo great...) but something which should not crash too often (LGPT crashes too many times...) and if not too hard which can make synthesis sounds (sample + synthesis) and MIDI out (at the end maybe also MIDI CC but if we arrive until here that would be good enough lol).

I thing it is more easy to do that for beginners in python or tracker making than modifying LGPT code (which is open source)

I already made the main navigation style (dirty coded and dirty looking, but basic things working). But I don't have a lot of time to work on it, and i'm new to Python so if people are interested buy working together it will be really more fast (and fun!).

There isn't a link yet, I have to upload the project somewhere. Maybe github but I also want to look alternatives because I already use github for work and, for confidential purposes I should prefer somewhere else.

Is there some people interested in that?
