Recording DMG gameboy - what is your preferred method?

martin_demsky says:
TL;DR version is basically describe the recording setup you use for capturing your tracks off your DMG. For those who cbf, here is my story below...

Hey all, I'm a bit of a noob. Ive written a bunch of tracks on my DMG and Im ready to record.
When listening to my tracks through my audio interface it seems like half of the track is muted or clicking, some parts have the completely wrong envelope, some are half volume, all sorts of random things that sound nothing like what I had written when you listen through other means. I have tried several gameboys, some were prosound modded and some were not. Through all of them, I do not get an accurate representation of what I wrote when plugged into the audio interface directly.
It is only a recent issue, as up until I planned to record these tracks I was listening to them live through a roland busking amplifier with a line in. Now interestingly, when I plug the gameboy into the busking amp, then use the line out of the busking amp into the audio interface none of the problems arrive and I can actually hear my track.
So what is going on here? What black magic is occurring by buffering through the busking amp first?
One would assume it is normalizing the level or strength of the signal in some way. How can I get this result without buffering through the busking amp?
Would a normal 4 channel mixer get the job done?

Any help figuring this one out would be greatly appreciated.

Rold1940 says:
hi! had a question about layering LSDJ tracks with other instruments, more specifically with kicks and snares. how would you do it? would you just layer it over the existing kick and snare in the WAV and noise channels, or would you take out the original kick and snare and place more traditional ones in place? also, how would you go about mastering a track produced in LSDJ? i know stereo imaging is a must if you want a wider sound, but in terms of EQ'ing, i'm clueless.

The secret is knowing where to look. So, I’ve made the process even easier by
compiling a list of websites that offer free samples and loops that you can use.
Many of these sites vary from major sound databases like Freesound.org to small blog
sites dedicated to a particular niche.
It’s important when you’re using sound asset sites to check the license agreement. All my speakers and headphones are pretty shit, so that might factor in, but I cannot for the life of me figure out where these comments are coming from.

All I do is plug an aux cable into my prosounded DMG and play it through Audacity, making sure not to horribly clip the audio. That's how I've done it since I got LSDJ years ago. Am I missing something? How do you guys record your music? Do you do any post production to make your music really pop, or do you keep it totally authentic?

rolf kasten says:
Hello my friends!
The first of 100 (one hundred) parts about the entire realm of music, computers and sound is online now. Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sound But Were Afraid to Ask.
Grandpa Soundstone Video 1, Raspberry Pi Part 1:

https://youtu.be/ypvSwTIVgVE

Let me tell you, what grandpa Soundstone has to say about this project:

“Hello,
I´m grandpa Soundstone and I´ve decided to learn something new. I´ve decided to learn coding sound, building MIDI controllers, building sequencers and even synthesizers and samplers, programming microchips and a lot more.

I want to know what´s going on under the hood of my VSTs, my DAWs, my hardware synths, my controllers and my computers. I want to understand this and I want to influence and master it yself, want to build, to change and to optimise the goings on, which make my speakers vibrate.

I´ve decided to learn everything about computers, that´s relevant for making music and sound and building equipment.

And – my friends – this is no show, no fake learning! I´ll really be learning myself in this series.
I will learn, I will let you watch me learning and getting experiences and I hope – and think – you will learn as well. I may coincidentially come across something I already know, know well enough to explain it to you. But mainly it´s going to be a “learn it yourself by doing it yourself”.

So – this series is going to be an adventure, a journey through hardware and software and sound and music and music production equipment and instruments and computer languages and physics of sound and and and...

It´s going to be a “learn it yourself by doing it yourself”. I´ve ordered a Raspberry Pi to start with.
I don´t now anything about it. I ordered it following the advice of a friend of mine.

And here it is.
It has just arrived.

Let me have a look, what I´ve got here.”

So far the words of grandpa Soundstone. For me there´s only one thing left to say:
Enjoy the journey! (And don´t forget to tell everybody about it.)
Rolf
