Merutochan says:
Hey all, wanted to share something I've been working on.
MAXMXDS is a tracker module player for the DS that takes inspiration from PT-1210 on the Amiga.

It is built on the foundation of a previous, more primitive version I made, called XMXDS.

It does IT/XM/MOD/S3M via pre-conversion to .mas format (mmutil from devkitPro handles that).
It features up to 32-channel through MaxMod's software mixer.
You get:
- BPM control with nudge and lock,
- 8 cue points plus a hot cue
- Beat synced rolling loops with quantized divisions
- Beat synced stutter,
- Transpose (+- 12)
- Per-channel mute/solo with oscilloscope views
- Pretty audio reactive visualizers.

Songs need converting with mmutil included in Maxmod distributions (e.g. devkitpro nds-dev). There's a handy python script included for mass conversion.

To try it on emulator, it requires "embedding" songs inside (I haven't found a workaround for that) so you'd need devkitPro to build it using "make emulator" instead of "make native".
Github release instead is a flashcart compatible (assuming the flashcart supports libfat, which most should). Just put the .mas song files in a foler at the same level of the .nds file.

Source, release and instructions are on GitHub:
https://github.com/merumerutho/MAXMXDS

Would love to hear from anyone who gives it a try.

LSDJ on the Nintendo 3DS?

Ray_N says:
I've been getting very frustrated trying to find an easy way of getting a Gameboy emulator for the 3DS that I can run LSDJ on. I've had it with my GB USB smart card, there's just too many problems to deal with regarding LSDJ save data, and that is the reason why I plan to have LSDJ on my 3DS rather than dealing with a finicky smart card.
So the question is, has anybody tried to get LSDJ running on the Nintendo 3DS? Is it also possible to get LSDJ running on that Nintendo virtual console thing with it's Gameboy emulator that it has?

BeatScribe says:
I want to use my LSDj as master and send data to the GB-303. I set the GB-303 to LSDj slave (I didn't pick this nomenclature!) And put LSDj to sync mode: LSDJ. When I hit play. They start together but the GB-303 is going much slower. Even if I set both at tempo 145 and press start at the same time, the GB-303's idea of what tempo 145 is seems a lot slower than LSDj.

I am using a GB Pocket and a modded Gameboy Color. I also tried Gameboy Color with Super Gameboy 2. I also tried swapping which device is master or slave, same results all around. GB-303 is on its own proprietary cart and the LSDj is on an everdrive.

Cementimental says:
My obscure DS music rom search continues, deep cut of the day is this odd unfinished DS port of the Teenage Engineering OP-1!?!?!?

Don't really know what it's quite doing but got some glitch looping + distortion going. There's a screen with a line and in+out points where at some point I briefly got a waveform to appear but not sure how... there's one with concentric circles of switches which just seem to make some click rhythms at a fixed bpm??, the keyboard grid in the photo plays notes, and two nice tape recorders which can record what's going on (including each other) and you can 'scratch' with.

Disappointingly it doesn't seem to record from the mic

If you hold select and left you can choose which screen is in the top screen

Seems to be no info about it anywhere except this github. Spent a while trying to figure out how to compile it before realising that the included .nds file does actually work on a real DS, just not in my emulator. :-/ https://github.com/efairbanks/op-1

desc from the github page:

This bit of Nintendo DS homebrew is deserving of its own repo. This is specifically pulled from my bitbucket account, and is hopefully the most up-to-date version of this software. It's a digital audio workstation for the Nintendo DS that presents the user with a set of "pages" that represent a particular piece of hardware you might find in a studio. (eg. a reel-to-reel tape recorder, a synthesizer, etc...) It's an ambitious project considering the Nintendo DS's lack of CPU-power, but I'm quite fond of the tape-deck emulation on this thing.

Roni says:
I was prepared to put together a MiniDexed unit when I noticed the abundance of MIDI hardware implementations for it and lack of straightforward solutions. Since one of my objectives was to control it with the Arduinoboy I got from Catskull I wondered if there might be a way to just stack them all together and do away with the middle man of extra MIDI IO hardware / DIN cable. Anyone here think that's possible or tried it out with any success?

[Resolved] Loud DMG after capacitor replacement

TechnoMage says:
Edit: This was fixed! I had the LR wires going to A+ and A- on the amp when I needed to sum them to one wire and connect A- to GND.

Hey there,

I have modded a handful of Gameboys but am a little rusty and am, by no means, an expert. I just finished recapping my son's DMG and tested out a few games. The audio seemed fine for the first couple games but when I tested Donkey Kong and Tetris, certain songs were consistently louder (by a very, very noticeable amount). For those affected songs, it sounds like only one of the pulse channels is louder as I can barely hear the other channels.

More accurately, if I put the volume at 100%, the unaffected music is comfortable for listening. When the affected music is playing, I have to dial the volume down to ~10-25% for listening to be comfortable.

Stuff I've done with it:
- Backlight + bivert chip
- PAM8302A amp + new speaker
- Power regulator replacement (R6 CleanJuice)
- New battery terminals
- New volume potentiometer
- New capacitors (except those under the LCD because they're a pain)

It's possible that I forgot to test these particular games after installing the amp but before the capacitors. Anyone know what could have happened?

Thanks!

handbaked says:
I'm trying to understand mGB presets and I read the github readme, the issue is I'm have weird results when trying to load what I think are saved presets.

I'm using a Everdrive X3 and the latest file from the github repo.

When I select + B to save a single channel or B to load a single channel, it sometime changes stuff on other channels as well. And if I reboot the cart, it doesn't seem to have saved the preset at all.

any help would be really appreciated.

Edit: It doesn't seem to be saving an srm anywhere. So I guess I'm at a loss as to why this doesn't save presets on a power cycle?

Edit: It seems that the loading of presets effecting other channels is a bug in the latest release of the rom file. If you hit B on ch1 it will knock the octave of the wav channel down two octaves as a default. There's also an issue where if you set ch1 to sustain and save it, then try to turn off sustain, it won't turn off and instead is cycles the width numbers above it. Older versions don't seem to do any of this. However, no versions seem to actually save the presets for later use... is this the case? Are presets stored in ram and dumped after turning off? If that's the case, that seems incredibly useless.

ryba says:
I have two EMS USB cartridges, both in working order (powers on, retains saves, etc.). However, whenever I plug them in, they are not recognized at all even when having gone through all of the driver signature hoops on Windows. I have also tried ems-qart and at least one other method on Linux (Pop_OS) to make sure I wasn't missing anything. I've tried different cables and have even jiggled the plugged in cables around a bit to make sure it wasn't a loose connection. The carts are probably about 10 years old at this point, and I don't know how well they're supposed to hold up. I'm considering running a soldering iron over the pins to see if there's a loose connection between the port and the cart board proper, but I'm unsure if that would work. Would someone give me advice on any possible fixes?
