Chipmusic will never die, because of iconic games like mario. That guy that did the symphony including a gameboy proves that chipmusic can be pretty much anything its master wants. As long as someone makes a lsdj track every once and awhile, someone else is going to get the bug for it.

In terms of the topic. Perhaps far in the future, there will be a retro nostalgia, people wondering what the first computers and video games were like. Or maybe those sounds will just be integrated into music for generations to come. Like they'll be relics unidentifiable except to cyber nerds pumped up on useless factoids.

You still have people who are really into ancient instruments and even harpsichords, and all kinds of century old sounds and things out there. So I could see chiptunes lasting in some form for quite awhile.

I don't think the mainstream record companies getting a hold of chiptunes as a new pop cultural scene would be a good thing. Although, I wouldn't mind going to an alternate timeline where that happens for just a few days (won't happen in this one, so no worries). Inter-demensional travel has been a little hard on my body lately. So I'm sticking around here for a bit.

Well, for all I know, chiptunes have technically existed since at least the 1930s (older than you might expect for this kind of genre) (if we're talking about the style of the sound and the fact that these sounds are technically synthesized with relatively simplistic waveforms). I think that's a good way to look at it. Why is a scene needed at all? We have all the tools we need, and more are coming all the time.

But the OP was probably intended as a Mental exercise. Will kids keep making this stuff when were gone? I think the styles will change (the over compressed chip-house stuff will die, someday), but interest in classic computers will keep these sounds alive. Computer music certainly isn't going away, why should chipmusic? Also Super Mario is like Mickey Mouse; the sounds of those games will live on, and inspire people to dig into the past. As much as we hate that.
