i just got a 1541U and it's great. before that, i didn't have any transfer-kit. for 15 years, because i already had what i needed. don't make things more complicated/slick/expensive than necessary.

thanx guys! i think the ultimate might be my best choice. I have been iffy about it because of the ordering process feeling a bit uncomfortable for me but it sounds like it is my best bet. xu1541 sounds real good too. i have some thinking to do. at any rate.... thanx you guys you were a big help

there was some DOS program called 64COPY i used to convert between tap/d64/prg/bin whatnot... it might help for you too

The c64 is able to run d64 files.  But don't get a usb floppy drive -- like goto80 says, it won't work with 1581 disks.
I transfer d64s from my PC to c64 diskettes using a cable that connects the 1581 to an adapter attached to the parallel port on my PC
(XM1541 or XA1541 adapters will work).

1) tap (tape) and d64 (disk) are emulator formats. prg is the extension that they gave to executable C64-files (which don't need to have an extension on the C64). not sure, but i guess putting tap and d64-files on 1581 would take some effort.

also, PC-drives don't really like 1581-disks. when i was using my 1581 i remember i had to read them on the amiga, which could also read pc-disks, and then get it to the pc. but perhaps that's changed by now.

the good thing with the 1581 is that the chicks dig it.

I know the answer to #2 - you can use MSSIAH with a single sid, but you wont get 6 channels out of it, only 3.

1) Are the file extensions like .prg, .tap, and .d64 the original formats used by commodore or are they made after to make it easy to share and use files in emulators?

Basically I want to see if its worth looking into getting a 1581 disk drive and using an external usb floppy drive for my modern computer to transfer info back and forth with 3.5 floppy.

i know for a lot of rom and other such formats (like nsf) they cant work on real hardware without converting it into an appropriate extension or having a special reader software for the device.

Is this the case with the C64?

2) also mssiah... do you have to do the extra chip conversion? I really only want to use the 3 main channels without adding an extra sid chip. its kinda put me on the wall about the thing.
