Victory Road says:
okaaay cool. slept on this and read this second page and i have a lot to think about! i will probably be raising the frequency and quality of variation (track gets boring after less than 2 mins = bad sign) and making that kick softer but there'a still a lot of things that won't really change. anything i change about this will probably propagate through the rest of the songs in one way or another.

leaving this open for comments but i'm pretty sure i've got everything i need. thanks everyone, i'm surprised how un-brutal your brutal honesty was!

Decktonic says:
OK so what you are describing is exactly what Unicorn Kid is doing with his new material and I think if you listen to his songs for a while you will realize what you are doing wrong.*

http://soundcloud.com/unicornkid/pure-space

The percussion is very understated and mixed in well. The kick just provides the consistent beat for the track but it doesn't call attention to itself. The rest of the percussion changes throughout the track, nice snare fills all around. And it's very fast and high energy but the whole point is letting the lead stand out and of course there are nice breaks and portions with no percussion at all which is very important IMO.

* And let me be clear that all art is subjective and you can just ignore everything I've said. But if you could incorporate this advice and make some really catchy melodic unce I would totally listen to it.

SketchMan3 says:
You're right about all the songs having the same structure making the album itself repetitive.
Victory Road says:
okay well i'm gonna be honest here: the title was basically a ruse to get people to look at the thread and i'm really asking if people dig the overall tonality and if they'd bare 20+ minutes of it. but i totally appreciate your advice and the sentiment!

admittedly, i feel like i'm a bit of an online attention whore, and while i can understand the merit of sticking to your artistic guns i love hearing exactly what people think about what i'm doing and finding ways to compromise without really compromising. horses for courses!

Victory Road says:
thanks man. other songs for this have breakdown kinda parts but then would you think it repetitive or annoying to have the same structural motif in every track? i dunno! maybe not.

the kick is gonna have to be revised it seems: it's significantly donkier than the kick drums in the other songs, which are also pretty high-q sorta sounds - gonna try to find a happy medium between my personal preference and what people actually enjoy listening to!

SketchMan3 says:
I like it. I'd listen to it, but with less "donk-donk-donk". It's just a tad over powering, and too high-Q sounding. A bridge breakdown would be nice, but it's not absolutely necessary. A verse variation would be great.

I really enjoyed the tune, and trying to pick apart the techniques you used to get all the sounds going. It made me think of how Ape Escape would be if it were an 8-bit anime.
