Hello, I just sent out some legal threats to Slate Magazine (washington post) for them using my music in some videos of theirs against my will, credited to a certain porno-uzi. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72YG2DhWHmE at 1min:13) Thats my track Sector 1B from C'etait mieux en RDA (2007)

I found some info about releases by him on here, so if anyone know how to get in touch with this guy let me know so we can solve this in a civilized manner. I hope it is just an error, like miss-credited or Slate that fucked up.

I've uninstalled Spotify so I can't do a direct comparison right now but that's pretty lame.  I'm assuming another case of "it's just video game music" and the video makers added the lame stuff on top of the soundtrack.  Booooo.

i guess i couldnt say what happened but i hope its not true, i like porno-uzi's stuff, his soundcloud has music from him underneath the name skwweeee(or something like that) as well, but i know the porno-uzi album was all ds-10 stuff. hope it gets figured out. wheres the legions of angry nerds?

I just got in touch with porno-uzi and he swears he is innocent. could this be a case of a sneaky videoproducer just taking some random chipmusic from the internet and putting a random name as credits aka to get free music? the first track in the video doesnt sound like the other tracks by porno-uzi on his soundcloud at all.

thing that bothers me is, there are clearly some changes to my track, a filter + an arrpegio and some reverb added on top of it. so I am still left with the feeling that something is quite laromlab with this story.

this is getting even more odd, all the other videos in the same campaign is said to have music by bit shifter,

edit: googled some more, one of the authors has also done video work for Good magazine, who has previously used my songs without permission back in 2008. wtf

i dunno man, whats odd about it is the whole shit if you werent contacted, simple as that.

if you care enough i would talk to josh and find out if he signed off on it and if he says no, try and discern if any other music thats in their clips might be familiar, approach those people and ask the same, and take it from there. unfortunately you dont have a lot of recourse here but in the grand scheme of things, does it hurt you at all or take away any fans from your music? i would think not because the sound in that is so fucking weirded out and maybe 1-5% of the people who would watch that crap would already be fans of yours and notice it to begin with.

i think when this kind of thing happens, theres a modicum of flattery that you should take into account and if it doesnt affect your bottom line, then spread the word that they've done this and let that speak for itself as opposed to trying to get them to take it down or credit you, you'll be fighting a losing battle with people who dont have anything invested one way or another. not saying to bend over and take it, but honestly it doesnt look like a bad video and while they didnt credit you, they can easily claim that its transformative art. so that isnt kind of a shitty factor thats not in your favor.

if you are irked to the point that you cannot accept that this is on the internet without your credit, send a cease and desist order and hope for the best, but certainly talk to others and approach it with as much concrete evidence as you can. this doesnt have to be a bad thing for you but if you dont approach them with no sentiment or emotion, they're most likely gonna see your weakness and disregard you fully. i hope for your sake you looked up a good form c&d letter and sent it to em before saying anything or opening any dialog, there is no reason for dialog with them inquiring about anything other than sternly letting them know you caught them taking your stuff and using it without your approval.

edit: sounds like maybe the pieces of this puzzle are comin together and now you got an idea of who's behind this. you have my axe if need be.

I am of the very simple principle that sharing is caring but if someone uses my work for commercial purposes (as this clearly is) I am not ok with it. Last time this happened, Good bent over and payed up, but Slate is 10 times bigger than Good and this video has 300k hits. With their random credits to chiptune artists not related to the music in the actual videos this seems like a clear case of the -picking free music of the internet without giving a fuck- syndrome that is getting more and more common. The thing that adds to it is that one of the creators was involved with the same mag (good) that did the exact same thing a few years ago...

The C&D letter has already been sent out. But I love personal dialogue with the people involved. Thing is, legalwise they are on very thin ice, so from experience I see no reason to bend over and take it.

What disgusts me is like, every day I get emails from fans and random people asking me if they can use my music in their non-commercial videos, games and whatever, which I am almost always cool with (if it's not political etc). But big players like Slate don't give a flying fuck. Their ignorance just sux

edit: thanks for the axe!

Also, I'd like to add another reason why this is upsetting. This is actually the third time this happens to me but the first case was somewhat different. That time there was a guy posing as the author for 2 of my songs licensing them to a similar magazine. When we got in touch with them, it showed up that he had gotten a $4 diggits check for the 2 songs, so there is no small money involved. Hence, I have learned to be on my guard against this kind of things. There seems to be an occupation where people pick obscure/free music of the net and sell/license it, in a true laromlab/timberland spirit of "its just a videogame you idiot".

I didn't watch them all but Romney vs. Cain has the Uncertainty Principle by Bit Shifter.

you would think bigger organizations would check their credits better and take precautions against this sort of thing.
