I've been wondering lately, would it be possible to dye dark plastic lighter without covering text? I'm aware that it is possible to dye the light grey plastics found on a gameboy using rit dye or x-metals. Could this or a similar principle be used to make a sega genesis (or any other dark plastic, for that matter) be a lighter color?
I'd imagine it's like dying dark hair, you have to bleach it before you put any color in.
I dunno nothing about trying to remove color from plastic though.
I've had a go at restoring Atari XL cases, restoring the Beige with Hydrogen Peroxide, not really 'bleaching', more of counter-acting the effects of light and Oxygen on the plastic.
In the case of dark plastics your only option would be paint I think. Good results can be had with the newer paints for plastics.
