I have a working C64 now. I'm just waiting on a new power cord for my 1581 floppy drive to come in the mail and I'll be all set to start experimenting and learning how to utilize it.

And I'll be honest...this thread is a blatant request for spoon feeding and hold holding. I'm at work right now and have access to a computer with a floppy drive. What files need to be put on the floppy in order to run Sid Wizard? The Sid Wizard site has some files available for download but there's also a Zip file on Sourceforge that contains hundreds of little files in it...I'm assuming the .sid files are sound presets?

The 1581 takes 3 1/2 inch floppies.

u probably just need to put the .prg file or the disk image .d64 on the disk. the little files are example songs or instruments for the tracker - .sid files are songs saved in sid format.

mm but:

is that a pic of the disk you are trying to use?

c64 disks are different:

idk maybe you are jokin? :)

there are peeps around that can put c64 progs on disks for you if you ask nicely.

Well I actually have a 1581 drive which takes the 3 1/2 floppy...will that work for tracking?

Im pretty sure that floppy drive doesnt have great compatibility with modern devices.

Thanks, I'll check out the links. I was thinking I might have been able to put the files on the disk via my Windows computer at work...but it seems like thats not the case...

To prepare an image, I can't think of any less cumbersome way than grabbing any 1581 disk image, format it in VICE and copy the files from the SID Wizard .d64 (1541 disk image) over to it. VICE comes with a tool to deal with 1541 disk images (c1541) but AFAIK none for 1581.

After you have the image you have to transfer it to physical disk. Apparently you can use fdutils in Linux to set the floppy drive controller up to the same sectors/tracks configuration as the 1581. Then you should be able to write the image to the floppy drive device using dd. From what I read, this only works with internal floppy drives since USB ones won't give you the low level access to the controller that fdutils need.

Any way you transfer it, you aren't going to get around extracting the program data from the .d64 somehow, so you should probably start with that. Get accustomed to c1541 and the BASIC disk commands.

EDIT: All right, there's a .prg file on the release page. Just load that in VICE and write it to an empty .d81 image and deal with the rest later! Good luck!

Thanks. This seems promising but I can't get the damn thing to open on my computer. I'll try on mine when I get home from the office.

I'll go ahead and put it out there that if anyone is able to put this on a 1581 floppy, I'll gladly pay them for their efforts. Until then, I'll continue tinkering with these programs...

Seriously, how can this be this hard? Not that I know anything about anything but couldn't you replicate this for under 1 dollar?
