I was trying to take the frontlight out of an old Gameboy Advance Sp (AGS-001) to put in my AGB-001,  but I messed it up.  I was using these instructions to get the frontlight out of the SP:  http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to- … /?ALLSTEPS

I got the screen out but messed up when the 2 layers of the ribbon cable peeled apart at the solder pads,  rendering the light useless. >:[

I was originally using these instructions for the project: http://forums.benheck.com/viewtopic.php?t=27338

Unfortunately,  neither of these websites show very good pictures of the process... I'm not even sure if I know what the frontlight component is supposed to look like!  I'm afraid they did not do a great job of describing the process.

I'm wondering if anyone out there has any tips?  Or knows of a better tutorial for this?  I have to start over from scratch now and find another old SP to sacrifice,  unless someone knows of a cheap frontlight kit for a Gameboy Advance???

I've backlit many DMG's before,  but the Gameboy Advance needs a front light.  I have never front lit anything before.  These places only sell backlights and it even says on one of the sites that to frontlight a GBC (GBA is relative) you need to take the frontlight from an AGS-001.  Thanks for the quick response though!

^ he's right, you're best to just go with a backlit replacement LCD.  no need to sacrifice one console for another like this

i'll have them restocked most likely tomorrow, i want to test them first before i put them up in the shop just to be sure they made the journey alright

this is the product, specifically: http://store.kitsch-bent.com/product/ba … lcd-screen

backlit, for the GBA.  doesn't require the death of a GBASP...  wink

First of, look at the gameboy *color* front light tuts, they're far more detailed, like this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eqn9kemZiqI (it's a bit goofy, but shows how you should get the front light of the SP and put it in the GBC). And repeat the same procedure but with your AGB.

Secondly, if you damaged the ribbon cable the front light is STILL FULLY OPERATIONAL (although a lot of "modders" say otherwise). Look at the yellow-ish part of the front light panel where the ribbon cable is attached  to - you'll see two distinct tracks. Scratch them a little bit with a knife or razor until you get to the metal and solder wires there directly (keep track of + and - though). That's it. You'll have you're front light.

The backlight kit is always a good option, perhaps a little bit more pricey, but it will give you beautifully backlit screen without hassle.

Just fyi,  the SP I sacrificed had a leaky battery...  And I know where to find broken Gameboy Sp's for a lot cheaper than the backlight screen,  so that's what I would like to try.  But Kitsch,  I'm lookin' at you for that music tech prom cart as soon as they're back in stock!  smile  Hope I didn't offend anyone with my ignorance it's just everything I saw indicated you needed a frontlight and just swapping the screens wouldn't work...or it was too complicated... I forget...

Who is making these for you? Or did you design this?

Even though some modders are still offeting it -*cough cough* Thursday *cough cough*- frontlighting a GBA is a thing of the past. Now you have backlight kits from Kitsch or RCG (or if you're patient enough, order one from China) that are much easier to install than DMG/Pocket. And for me personally, it's risk-free unlike the trouble of getting crap all over the SP frontlight when modding a Color.

Here's a comparison of the old afterburner frontlight kit and a backlit GBA of my own I sold some time ago:

Oh, and btw, the GBA backlight thing has been going for two years now.

Ok,  ok,  ok... Y'all have convinced me.  Kitsch If you can get them in stock while I still have some $ left (got paid today) I will buy a GBA backlight screen and the PRom cart for Pixelh8's Music Tech as soon as I humanly can!
