just picked up said atari and have maxy running well with piggy tracker. the only problem is that there is no native way to get the audio out of the atari other than through the speaker built into my monitor. anyone know of documented audio out mods or similar? google has been quite unhelpful.

im not going to be much help here, unfortunately and living in America, you dont have access to the atari st's we do here in Europe, but when i looked into what to buy, all i saw was STE STE STE STE phono audio and video out. so despite being able to acquire several STFM's i never dared do so.
What outputs does the STFM actually have? RF? VGA?
Basically if theres no mod for extracting the audio out of the video cable, then youre going to need a monitor with a headphone jack (that can connect to the atari), or to buy an STE, or to unhook the speaker cone, and replace it with an audio jack. You could maybe keep the cone and add a switch to flip between speaker and line output.
Ive had trouble getting my atari rig set up even, and im using an STE! good luck with your quest!

by the way are you sequencing using Piggy, and using Maxy's midi in to trigger the chip remotely? That is one of the many things I aimed to do with my ST. Id love to see even a video with poor sound direct out of your monitors speaker, just to see the awesomeness involved. please make one! 
It has the big 13 pin deal that runs to the monitor. it also has a television out which looks like an rca. tried that to see if by chance audio would run but no luck.

ah yeah if its just one RCA then clearly just for video, not audio. bummer. I really dont know what to suggest at this point, other than potentially killing yourself by discharging a capcitor when you open and potentially fuck up a lovely atari ST monitor.
Sell the STFM, buy an STE. i dont want to sound like an unhelpful dick but this is a good way to save yourself all the trouble, if you can get one reasonably in the U.S.A
video is sick! so theres notes in the columns; they are just being ignored whilst piggy transmits midi directly into the AY chips' brain? I love you.
I mean is there any way to just solder an output from the circuit board or is that out of the question?
I've devised a very funky workaround. I have a television that has a headphone jack that runs rf. bam. giant pain in the ass and atari bumping through my stereo
also speaking with a buddy he found this that somehow slipped through my fingers.

http://atari4ever.free.fr/ find "AUDIO.ZIP" at bottom of page. Pulls the audio from the Hi-Rez connector.
There are also mods to tap the 3 channels from the AY chip, but are more involved.

what i use to do was to take the audio out thou the 13 pin din (it is Pin 1) I was using a TV at that time .look here http://info-coach.fr/atari/hardware/interfaces.php
later on then i got a monitor for it, i solder a wire to the plug, i use a scart plug in the monitor.
when i got a new Atari ST a couple of years back, i talk to a guy over at Ebay, that is making/selling cables and he could make a cable for me.
But instead of I bought a Atari STE so i never needed that cable.. but i think i can find the guy, that could make the cabel.
