So line-in isn't doing it for me anymore, and I want to get the clearest sound i can get from my gameboy. I bought this http://www.amazon.com/Behringer-UCA222- … rol+uca222 because I heard it was good for chiptune, but it's a complete piece of shit. Nothing but whine from that thing. So I'm returning it and want to get something thats actually good. Recommendations?

buy a used Profire 610. not a huge fan of m-audio stuff in general, but the preamps on this interface sound unusually good for the price. pretty minimal on the inputs, but you really don't need much for electronic music, and the 2 individual headphone outputs can be really helpful,

Are you using a prosound mod on your Game Boy? If not, that might account for some of the whine.

I use an M-Audio interface I found in the trash at my college years ago. Still works really well.

Also, you might want to try another of the Behringer interfaces. Their QC is spotty sometimes and you might've just gotten a dud.

Anything under $100? The Profire 610 looks perfect but it's a bit more than what I can spend at the moment.

Edit: yes the gameboy has a prosound mod. I shoulda specified that.

not a huge fan of the preamps on them, but focusrite is known to have pretty solid D/A converters which is probably more important when you're recording line level from a GB. Check this one out.

EDIT: maybe not a good idea for getting stereo from the gameboy (duh tongue), check out this instead: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Focusrite-Scarl … 2c8c4b31f5

the Profire 410 is also an option, they go for about $70 on ebay. the preamps are a pretty significant step down from the 610, but if you're looking to just record gameboy, you might be able to get away with not using them

I just got done talking to a friend who has one of these that he's willing to sell, and it's pretty much exactly what I need http://www.amazon.com/Lexicon-Alpha-Des … 000HVXMNE. Thanks for the help but I think I'm good now.

There really shouldn't be anything wrong with the UCA222 you have. Have you correctly installed any drivers required? Do you have examples of the sound issues you're experiencing with it? I've used both the UCA202 and the UCA222 and they sound perfectly fine.

The Focusrite Scarlet series are one of the best deals to come out this year.

+1 anyone recommending focusrite stuff. if you can get a 2nd hand scarlett 2i2 then that would be great!
the lexicon alpha is good too, bit on the old side but it should work ok.

also kinda OT but regarding game boy whine: it's ~9.25KHz and you'll get it with or without a prosound mod, but you can easily notch it out with a parametric EQ smile

Another one for m-audio, I can't remember what my little recording device is (it's in a box somewhere) but when I've used it, it's worked really well. I'm pretty sure it's reasonably cheap, I "borrowed" mine from school a while back, so I'm not sure of the retail price

also seconded, I have a zoom h4n and it's a real workhorse. Definitely worth the cash if you'd also like a portable microphone. Personally I would still recommend getting a good computer interface first.

I'd go for Focusrite as well if on a budget. Their drivers seem stable.
(Would not recommend having just a Zoom instead of a proper i/o)

This is what I use:

Works like a charm, but the drivers are a pain to get working on linux if thats your thing.
