ah the nomad... so much bass and also a really REALLY shitty signal to noise ratio.  here's a mod i found before i realized you can replace the whole screen.  i installed a switch that cuts power to the screen.  this mod is really cheap and removes about 50-60% of the noise in the damn thing.  with a capacitor replacement i think this thing will be fully operational.  so much noise is produced by these old, dead electrolytic caps.

This is pretty rad. The nomad really is impossibly noisy.

Please do, man. And if there's a way to document and/or make it easier on the rest of us, I kindly suggest that would be most rad of you to document it.... Just got my nomad in the mail the other day. I want to replace the screen; especially if it gets rid of a bunch of the noise

Where did you find the schematics for the screen toggle mod ? I've detached my nomad screen already because I just use it for GenMDM , but there is still some noise , which capacitors should I replace ?

the screen toggle mod basically shuts the entire front PCB off so just look for the power coming into the front PCB and stick a switch where the power lead is.  If I remember correctly its just a red and white/black wire that you can see clear as day.

I put one of these into the Genesis model 3 I bought at 8static Fest (the model 3 doesn't have stereo output unless you add an additional amp, so I figured why not get something good?)
Installation was pretty straight forward, the image guides on the Sega-16 forums show exactly which components need to be removed from the Genesis PCB and the soldering points to use.  It didn't specify a place to connect the 5V and GND, though: I went with the same connection points as the standard audio amp.

It sounds niiiiice. I went with the unfiltered version of helder's PCB version of the amp, and I'm glad because I love how clear the high end is compared to a typical Genesis.
Here's an audio recording from my setup: the main table theme from Dragon's Fury:

yo that sounds nice - you should record Mega Turrican if you can - the bass is much more apparent in that soundtrack (not that this one isn't siiiick).  The top end on this recording is really fucking clean but I'm missing some of the bass (thankfully when I EQ it...  wow).  Genny 3 is probably the cleanest / most noiseless out of the box.  It's also the most reliable in terms of playback for live stuff.  I've tried all three.

jmr: wow that is super clean! definitely going to look into that mod.

animalstyle: I've only used a Nomad a little but I recorded a track from an unmodded one and never noticed any noise like you're hearing in that vine clip - strange. Also, thanks for the tip regarding the Genny 3, I might have to pick one up one day. I'm hoping to be able to play live with a couple of Gennys (Megadrives, actually) in the future. heart

Hey so can I output the same results if I just disconnect the screen on the inside ( there is a cable that detaches inside and disables screen and Audio still playable ) I still kinda get that bit crush noise from old caps I think
