Hey! I got this sweet Roland SoundCanvas and Soundbrush and it makes all those dank General Midi sounds.
Thing is, I gotta write .mid files onto these floppy disks that the SoundBrush reads for me to make some fully formed songs on it.
HOW do I write and save .mid files? Again, just general midi type stuff.
Most daws have midi export. You can also play your sequence into the sound canvas and record direct to floppy.

Fruity Loops is awesome for MIDI.
I would invest in some sort of MIDI interface if you don't have one so you can compose with it. I use a Roland Um-one.

yea i do all my .mid stuff in FL, it has the roland soundcanvas .dls built in too so you don't need to keep exporting and checking too often (unless you're doing silly stuff with automation or breaking the 32 voice polyphony limit)
I recommend hooking the sound canvas up to the midi out and playing it from the DAW until you're ready to export. (Or just record it that way in the first place.)

Should be able with most DAWs to set MS synth for the output, but you may want to setup Midi Yoke and MidiOx also. Midi yoke is Virtual cables between software and MidiOx is a great helper app to filter and route midi streams, it adds alot of control to your setup. For instance: routing a midi interface IN to a Sound Font soundcard synth or routing a Keyboard midi IN to a midi OUT and a DAW or the output of a soft seq to a DAW.
For just a standalone midi seq, there are lots of old apps. Just recently found a legal and free DL for Cakewalk 3 (strictly midi).

There is another seq you may want to check Seq24, http://www.filter24.org/seq24/
a cross platform midi sequencer that is aimed at live performance. It is loop based as opposed to the more standard piano roll. More along the lines of LSDJ in a way or more like a hardware seq..

I really like an old cheap windows program called NoteWorthy Composer because it treats the entire experience like writing a word doc, you can copy and paste notes and move around with the keyboard.
I hate using the mouse for making MIDI which is what most DAWs force you to do; put little squares on lines.
Another really nice tool I use only for composing is iSequence for the iPad. Its a roland-like interface where notes go left to right and you just tap them in place. I think I can compose fastest on iSequence but it's lack of time signatures/tempo changes and dotted notes makes it kind of limiting, but it's fine for making some 4/4 type stuff.

I used to use voyetra midi orcestrator plus back in the day. Im not sure the current best solutions for editing MIDI.

Change the view to 'event list', most DAWs have that.

I tried this but it failed to install several times, saying that it couldn't open a disk... any ideas? have I forgotten to install something?

Oh yea, sorry. you have to unzip into a folder call"DISK 1" and install from there.
