Most wire between 26 and 30 gauge will work. Closing the shell is no problem, placement of the wire is the problem. You must make sure the wire does not rest underneath any of the supporting plastic that makes contact with the other side of the shell/pcb when closed.
I used a 28 gauge at my job since the one I got when I ordered my prosound mod was too short ! :S
Handheld legend sells some 28 gage wire http://handheldlegend.com/collections/p e-5-meters
My mods have gone fine with wire from a sacrificed phone line. Have also used salvage from otherwise broken usb and Ethernet cables.
I bought a spool of wire wrapping wire that seems to work pretty well. It's thin and there is a lot of it, so it will probably last a while. If you have decent wire strippers it's pretty easy to strip as well.
Just get yourself a bunch of different kind of this wire: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Stranded-indoor 5d521f03f0
Shipping will take a while though.
I use chicken wire.
Hardcore as fuck

It's only hardcore if you use barbed wire for your mods

Hahaha, it seems like I've heard that in the early days farmers built out rural telephone networks using their existing barbed wire fences. Pretty hardcore.
I like solid core so I can bend it onto the most efficient rout point to point and it will retain it's shape.
I like Ben&Jerry's Core so I can eat it... because... it's tasty...
I use ipod charger cable wire. It's super thin, easy to work with, cheap ($2 or less, ebay, china) and you get 4 different colors in a 3.4 ft cable.
Good for all small solder point projects.
