Hey friends!

I've been making chiptunes for a little over a year, and somehow I still haven't figured out how to get good percussion for my music. I use OpenMPT to make the music, and the two VSTs that get the most use are tb_triforce and basic65.

I've tried to use VSTs made specifically for percussion, but they either crash OpenMPT or they don't give me the sound I want. Can anybody help me?

Maybe it would help if you posted examples of what you are looking to do?

OpenMPT is a sample-based tracker at heart and for percussion that's a pretty easy way of getting whatever sound you want. There are almost an infinite number of free drum samples available online, Is there a reason you don't want to use samples?

Are you perhaps struggling with programming interesting & emotive patterns? Drum tracks require a conscious effort to produce. I struggle with this myself. I've had mixed success with critically listening to mainstream music and simply trying to copycat the exact same patterns, fills, etc. After I've laid down the drums, I can start to jam on top.

Use lsdj or famitracker or something and make punching and kicking video game sound effects = chiptune percussion

Don't listen to herr_prof here. If you can get the sound out of Toad that you want, nothing else matters. Toad is extremely limited but it's also free and quite simple, so give it a shot if you like the sound. Don't worry about whether the technology behind it is cool or not.

(Full disclosure, I uninstalled Toad pretty quickly after trying it out because I didn't personally like the sound.)

If you're really set on using  a vst, use Sforzando, and find a drum soundfont you like somewhere.

Well, that was my first suggestion.
