I am working on a sound performance involving a telephone.
I want to use the telephone to generate DTMF tones without being connected to a phone line.
Is it possible ?

Yes, would have to supply the 'Battery' on the line and should work. BUT have you thought about generating the DTMF via arduino? Here is a cool recreation of a blue box, and does all kinds of tones as used on many different systems-
