i wouldn't buy a ton of stuff for making gameboy music before you've ever even used lsdj. download the rom for 2 bucks from the official site. and at least make one simple song with it before you buy a gameboy, a flash cart, the materials to do a pro sound mod, a midi interface, a midi keyboard, etc.
get the rom for two bucks, try the rom, THEN get other stuff (if you like it).

For me it's all about the feel, the sound and the portability of the hardware. Just using LSDj on an emulator would never get me hooked. Besides, the price for a DMG, a LSDj licence and a USB cart is ridiculously low for what you get imho.
