Hey,

i've never tried to write music on the C64, so... i've got some questions about it...

Which trackers can actually run on C64 Systems?

Are there Floppys for it?

What do i need beside a C64 system and a floppy disc drive?

Any chance of modding it?

If there's already a thread about it, link it to me, so i will get the information from that one.
Thank you!

Best,

its not a console! tongue

you can get MSSIAH on a cart, but you'll still need floppies to save. its not a tracker though

there are tons of music progs but things like SDI/JCH/DMC/Johnplayer/ are all good - get em here: http://noname.c64.org/csdb/

johnplayer is most simple

you wont really need anything else really other than computer cables diskdrive and a teevee/monitor

I'd recommend before you splash out on hardware try Goat Tracker or doing something through an emulator first.  You'd be surprised how many people don't like the interfaces on c64 stuff in general, coupled with the clunky DOS.  As an alternative you can do the work on emulator and save to tape using PSID64 and WAV-PRG for ultra low-budget conversion.

Couple more recommendations for on-c64 tools:

Music Assembler, easy interface though not tracker.
Aleksi Eeben's Polly Tracker (4 channel digi tracker)
Electrosound.  Old but if you want to try out liveplay stuff/mess with sounds uding synth-style interface.
Aleksi released a really good liveplay tool called Retroskoi.

Ditto on the icky C64 man-machine interface. For me, the big turn offs are: sloppy feeling keyboard that is confusing to use, 1541 series drives that are quite slow and often need maintenance, and the sheer space and weight of keeping the hardware around. Be prepared to put a good amount of time and effort into learning the quirks of the various operating systems, fiddling with hardware and doing repairs, especially to PSUs and drives. Weigh all that and see if the benefit is worth it to you. To me there are a few pleasurable vintage computers to bother with maintaining and using on a regular basis, and C64 isn't one. Just my opinion.

EDIT: If, however, you decide to use original hardware, I have a couple of 1541 disk drives which need a new home. Let me know.

I am learning Sid Duzz It, so i created one nice PDF just for two doubleside A4s, if anyone is interested. Another file about SID waves is also included:

BTW, where is that crossplatform Goat Tracker for C64 natively? On SourceForge is OSX and Windows version which seems good (i got some latency, dont know why and i have installed ASIO).
