also if we didn't want to be too cheap about it, we could cop the 8bitpeoples tee's style and have "chipmusic" in the title typeface on the back kinda small

I like the design by Pixls, however It would make sense to us as chippers only. Perhaps adding the URL below it in blocky font would help? Otherwise It doesnt really advertize the site or the music. I think Egr is closer to a good target, but add the .org maybe?
A good rule of thumb is that the general population doesn't ever think more than they absolutely have to. Therefor you have to do all the thinking for them if you want to optimize the amount of people you reach.
