Currently interested in them. Love the fact that they sound pretty close to a distorted electric guitar (to me, at least).

I want one, but I don't know where to get/make/steal/find people who have/whatever one. Any of you have experience with that sort of thing?

I am not sure if you are aware, but tesla coils are fairly dangerous, especially ones that can make those kinds of very long, loud sparks. Also, you may find them to be infeasible for actual musical applications, as controlling the volume level is very hard, thus making dynamics difficult. The risk to yourself and other equipment will likely prove to be a big hassle to deal with, and overall a tesla coil will likely prove to be a very expensive musical instrument choice, probably more expensive than other name-brand pro synths.

From what I've read, when building a tesla coil you have to actually manufacture a lot of the parts yourself and cannibalize from other sources. Many of the parts you need will be difficult or impossible to otherwise get ahold of. None the less, it is cool to see and hear someone playing sound through a tesla coil's PCM chip!

In the meantime, you can play around with Airwindows free plug-in Nikola "an attempt to do the sound of an audio Tesla Coil."

But that's a Mac plugin, isn't it...

Yes, it is.....

Saw some guy playing guitar through two Tesla Coils at Maker Faire yesterday. Awesome!

Want a playable Tesla Coil? Check Amazing One, they sell parts and plans. Of course, it's gonna cost you up the yin yang. Still, I got some of the cheaper kits they have at the site and they're fun.

I just have to post this:

From this site : http://www.noiseaddicts.com/2009/04/plasma-speakers/

Plasma speakers + chip music seems like a perfect match. I am very intrigued.

I just thought I'd point out that just as a guitar amp doesn't have a PCM chip, so too does a tesla coil lack a PCM chip.

My bad, thanks for clearing that up. I could have sworn that I read somewhere that that was how they pushed sound through a Tesla coil, but I am probably remembering incorrectly. ^^;
