This might seem like a dumb question but bear with me...

I just bought this guy - http://www.denhaku.com/91/sb55s.jpg

You put midi files on floppy disks and it will play the midi files back over whatever devices you plug a midi cable to. So, I can use it to sync LSDJ to anything midi (drum machines, keyboards, whatever). Pretty excited about it.

Anyways, I figured I would just be able to use Reason to make these midi files. However, midi files exported from Reason do not work with this guy. Reason will condense multi channel midi files to just a single channel and if it plays at all, it sounds like crap.

I am curious what program you guys would use for this. Preferably something with a piano roll instead of notation. And something that will let me program CC stuff too!

That's awesome!

There' GOT to be a way to do this with Reason, I can't believe that Reason wouldn't be willing to output a multi channel MIDI file.

But personally, I'd probably do this in music notation software, like Sibelius or Finale. They've got pretty robust MIDI export options. Doesn't help if you're not a) familiar with traditional notation and b) sitting on a few hundred spare dollars.

i used cubase when we used a lot of midi, or maybe somthing cheaper like reaper might work?

Well, it's not a piano roll but using TuxGuitar (Chip's Challenge's tablature software of choice!) let's you export MIDI.  Careful making more than 10 instruments, though, it might have trouble

They export well into Ableton, Reaper, and Logic.  Haven't tried other DAWs

FL studio does MIDI fantastically. Imports the score for each channel separately, as well as all CC automation (even if it doesn't do anything to the GM instrument). Exports any changes you make perfectly, too. Plus the sequencer is pretty neat, imo.

The only downside is that it does wacky things to the tempo when you change the time signature in the project settings (not MIDI) to something other than x/4. Give it a shot, I think the demo lets you import and export midi... maybe not export actually but have a go anyway!

i've googled and googled and read the manual. everything gets smooshed into channel 1.

i went to college for classical music so a notation program like that would be rad, except for - would it let me program CC changes? and yeah, i lack hundreds of dollars.

you can't send midi info out of reason. i could maybe export each track individually and then record each track individually from some other program? that'd be such a pain though.

a friend of mine swears by reaper so i will ask him about his midi experience with it.

oh wow, i just downloaded this and i think it might be perfect!

i can't export from the trial version to see if it works with my hardware but it looks great. i'll play with this some more and probably will buy it tonight.

the sounds you're hearing are not coming from the sound brush. they are coming from the "SOUND CANVAS". they are two different devices meant to work together. the sound brush only sends midi info out, no audio. the sound canvas then generates the audio.

um...... yes you can i remember back in the day exporting drum patterns out of reason's drummachine sequencer looking thing.
