Hey Delek - I understand now and did upsample them. My reasoning for wanting to "tune" the sample rate is that there is a certain character to sample rates... Like the low MHz warble of Skitchin or the sample rate switching for the bass drum and snare in Wolverine's Admantium Rage. A slider would be nice but that does seem hard as fuck to implement now that you explained it. Maybe some kind of lookup table could let you add a slider to the rate? Sorry - I'm the dude who will bug you to be able to split the sample channel into 4 seperate channels like Skitchin lol. Sorry in advance - amazing tracker you have there.

Topic: Best Audio mod for the Genesis (16 replies, posted in Sega)
I have tried just about every model of the Genesis looking for the best audio. I used the Crystal Clear Audio mod from tiido at first, then i switched to the unmodded model 3 which was a bit tighter and cleaner sounding (didn't matter that it was mono because i was using TFM - which didn't support panning). It's also possible to stereo mod the model 3... Recently, I bought a good High Definition Graphics model (from madgearstore) and did a full electrolytic capacitor replacement. I have to admit - there is a little more signal to noise ratio but overall the sound is much fuller. I remeber having a model one and loving playing it with my headphones on when i was like 12. There is definitely more bass and the thing doesn't sound computery or digital. That was basically my gripe with both the CCAM and the model 3. I might as well have been using a really accurate emulator. Both the model 2 and 3 have ASIC versions of the YM2612 which means you won't see the actual chips on the board and I think the sound suffers because of it. On the High Definition Graphics model one there is a dedicated YM2612 and for some reason the PSG master system chip sounds way better. If you're looking to replace the caps you will need:
7X 47uf 16v
13X 10uf 16v
6X 1uf 50v
9X 100uf 10v
4X 220uf 10v
When you replace the caps - the voltages do not matter so much... you just don't want to go down in volatge - up is fine. I bought a cap kit from Jameco but after reading about HIFI audio amplifiers I had another thought. Why not replace the caps in the audio section with some really hi-fi stuff: Like some Black Gate or Elna Silmic caps. After reading this article i think the problem with the audio output is not really the original schematic... its probably the horrible components the units shipped with. I know that from modding tons of Boss pedals they make a great product and overtime ship shittier and shittier parts inside to cut costs and make a more profit. A lot of the complaints with noise on the Genesis come from electrolytic capacitor drain over time so you start to hear unwanted AC noise, VDP noise, and general tone harshness. It's much more apparent on an FM machine than on the NES' 2A03 because those don't actually need an amplifier for line level on a mixer. The FM chips need really amazing amplifiers with very accurate capacitor filtering.

It was found back in 2009 that Toy Story basically has a 4-channel SEGA Genesis MOD player that uses the DAC. Perhaps Skitchin' uses a similar engine?
Didn't know about that one... pretty cool info. Thanks! I probably never realized because i usually skip over the Disney shit.
I doubt its the same engine. I can't see Disney working with the guys who created Road Rash and Skitchin.

Delek wrote:I don't get it. You can write whatever you want into the PCM channel, a wav of a 4 strings chord for example or have separates sounds and sum them all. What's exactly the interesting part of this?, there's a source code example out there?
Right but you probably have a limited amount of memory to store samples, so having the ability to get multiple notes out of 4 samples is interesting versus just brute force sampling tons of guitar chords to use.
yea totally. The sound design on that game soundtrack is pretty fuckin genious. Definitely an extension of the Skate or Die aesthetic!

We were watching it on the GensKmod's debug section and we were getting pretty confused. There was so much overlap that we didn't understand how the sample guitar was shifting pitch but the drums weren't. There would be too much room taken up if every guitar note was a different sample.

Apparently the game Skitchin' gets 4 voice polyphony out of one sample channel thanks to Kevin Pickell. They used 2bit samples and only one of the channels was capable of changing pitch (the guitar). Dino and I were hanging out so we asked Jeff Van Dyke about it on twitter.

Re: PSG vs. FM vs. DAC (SAMPLES) (17 replies, posted in General Discussion)
FM is a really abstract thing. If you notice... most Genesis game soundtracks are not that good. Don't get me wrong there are some fucking amazing indispensable banger soundtracks but lets face it: when the Mega Drive came out there was a history of people using PSG type chips before the Mega Drive... so, you couldn't just be like "here... use the complete opposite type of synthesizer," and think you'll get amazing results. Also, Sega had to adapt their amazing arcade soundtracks to fit this dinky underpowered chip. FM, while the predominant medium for arcade machines didn't get the same treatment when shrunk down to the play at home market. The way I look at it... It's now our responsibility to make that chip sing. There is a whole lot of potential for new FM music and it's not that hard to get started with the tools out there. There certainly was no synthesizer boot camp youtube channel back in the 90's

Re: RIPPING SAMPLES FROM GENESIS .BIN ROMS (35 replies, posted in Sega)
Nevermind I got it! I did some sleuthing in Genskmod (CPU>Debug>Genesis>SoundYM2612>looked at Channel 6) and I found the samples were played back at 13357Hz (Galaxy Force 2) - thats really fucking strange because i thought they were all in like 8000, 16000, 32000 etc. I think Deflemask needs a new option! But yea... I found the data by importing the .bin rom in Audacity with import raw data > Unsigned 8bit PCM, no endianness, sampleRate at 13357Hz. They are towards the end of the data - weird stuff!

hey - totally reviving this post... I'm trying to rip the Galaxy Force 2 samples - got some recorded from an emulator but I'm noticing some differences when played back on the hardware. anyone want to take a stab at it?

a little late to the party... native tracker would be so fun! why does everyone want native trackers to look like LSDJ - what about a Cybertracker (C64) style interface where you can drag the envelopes and stuff. that would make more sense for FM although maybe the PSG part could be all LSDJ like?
