Maybe someone could start a thread dedicated to people posting their top 3 download figures or something? Keep it simple ya know?

Example:

SONG TITLE                  Date Released                   Downloads
Lewd Title here               07.18.209                           7,231,314
My 1st LSDJ tune            01.12.2002                          10,111
Cover song #23              11.22.2010                           1,111

People seem to dig the KRK stuff, maybe I'll invest as well...I have to go out to the car for the level mix!

No one has mentioned http://www.micromusic.net netlabel yet?

It used to be hard for DEVO it get gigs, so they's tell the venue they were a top 40 cover band. When it came time for the show, they'd say "Here's another one by Foghat!" then play one of their own songs! lol

So perhaps next time someone asks for "MArio!" say "Guess which mario this is from?!" and play your tune! ahhaaha F'em!

Just do a set of tunes that you enjoy playing, simple.

As to the "play mario" thing: I think that has the chance of happening whenever there are 8 bit sounds being played in a public space. Most people don't know you can actually have original music unrelated to a game coming out of these devices. Its my impression that people assume these are themes to games they havent played. Eduction at the front-line is everyone's responsibility. wink

Even if the labels posted their downloads and/or sales, you'd still not get the pirated numbers. I think there is a crazy ratio of pirated albums vs sold (10+ to1?). If an artist has 500 sales, but has 10,000 pirated copies...do they get a gold pirate ship plaque? lol

I know many chippers don't sell their work so this doesn't apply to everyone, but for those that do, its a pirates bounty on the sea of internets!

The intro to "Mind Games" sounds like DMG bigtime. I live the new album, got the 16 track version. Track 8 "Step Up "is the best!

It would interesting to know the numbers of peoples downloads/sales but I dont think it really matters at all. Just focus on making and/or enjoying the music~! wink

I don't want to depend on the chip community to gain popularity, currently I just see it as a way to get feedback on my work from other artists and hear what others are doing.

While this sounds kinda harsh it's a good method, if you get stuck trying to get the chip scene to love your music, you might become popular in here, but what i'm sensing is that once you're here, it's kinda hard to get out anywhere else.

Music is music, if its good people will dig it anywhere, not just in chiptopia. wink

And most of the time we're just selling music to fellow musicians.. never the masses that have no clue what 8bc or cm.org are.

tl;dr Music that sells is 50% quality, 50% marketing.

Marketing is as important as the music for the artist. The music can be amazing but if no one knows about it, it gets lost in the sea of chipmusic (even more so for music in general!) Even established artists need to promote new works otherwise they get lost too. The public's attention span is growing shorter and shorter. I notice when an artist from 2 years ago releases something its sometimes a "comeback" album lol

Well said Logan.

Giving away music for free and getting 1000 DL's is gr8. However getting 1000 people to purchase your work says more about an artist in my book. No offense to the Freebies.

About gear: Some people like the creative limitations of their favorite device, some don’t...Just do what you enjoy, because ultimately what does it matter?
