That wasn't an attack on you, dude. I was talking about the people earlier who were being dicks. You were being friendly, as far as I can tell.

I don't think this thread was meant as a pity party, it was meant as a way of sharing some other cool tracks that didn't quite make it.

Nothing says chiptune community more than being a dick for no reason. Congrats for being internet, guys!

I applied too, although I couldn't afford much more than airfare so if you invite me to come down I'd need to find a couch to stay on. tongue

I don't think people are offended by the cost but by the fact that it's a purely aesthetic modification and doesn't actually improve the experience. I would pay a lot of money for a high quality product that did something new and interesting or added features.

So the resistor was necessary to limit the amount of power the back light was drawing...

This is interesting. 2 AAAs produce the same voltage as 2 AAs, however the available amperage is about half. I find it hard to believe that a pocket with a backlight draws anything close to 1 amp while running.

I think I've figured out a way to eliminate the extra noise produced by the EL, it involves an amplifier external of the MGB's motherboard.

Hoping onapokoya chimes in, maybe Kitsch too.

Does anyone know if his EL back lights are going to be restocked or are they discontinued?

Carthik

It probably wasn't drawing 1 amp but was drawing enough to drop the voltage just a tiny bit below what was required. Some component on the MGB wasn't operating at that slightly lower voltage.

It would legitimately be cheaper to go to your local metal shop, hand them your NES and have the build you a one-off stamped aluminum case. You could get a custom design, stamped and welded, for way less than what this thing sells for.

How much voltage is the EL panel supplied with? Since this is a MGB, I'm curious if the 2.4-3V is enough if your using standard batteries.

There is an internal voltage regulator board which increases the voltage output to +5v and something like -20v. Nothing runs on the battery voltage alone.

How fast does that drain the batteries?

No way, dude is using a SAMPLE TRACKER just use samples, and dont sound like everyone that put out a chiptune ep in 2005.

Well, that was my first suggestion.

I've been trying to figure out who to email about this but I'd love to support another production run if possible. I'd even be happy to purchase any raw PCBs that happen to be left over.

Toad is just a bunch of wrapped samples. Dont use toad.

Don't listen to herr_prof here. If you can get the sound out of Toad that you want, nothing else matters. Toad is extremely limited but it's also free and quite simple, so give it a shot if you like the sound. Don't worry about whether the technology behind it is cool or not.

(Full disclosure, I uninstalled Toad pretty quickly after trying it out because I didn't personally like the sound.)

Use a multimeter and make sure nothing is bridging those pins/pads.

OpenMPT is a sample-based tracker at heart and for percussion that's a pretty easy way of getting whatever sound you want. There are almost an infinite number of free drum samples available online, Is there a reason you don't want to use samples?

Depending on the particular chip the locking mechanism may be easy or very hard to circumvent. Some chips can be tricked with quick transient voltages to unlock but others would require decapping, a process which I'm basically going to tell you now is too dangerous to do yourself (and would cost a lot to get done semi-professionally).
