I do write originals but I also enjoy making covers and I'm considering releasing one.

Say I wanted to do a chiptune cover of a song. Do I have to license it? What would I need to do?

So actually I think I'm going to be cheap and get a tr-505 instead. It's got midi capabilities and sounds decent enough so whatever!

Yes, I've heard that the smart media ones can be a pain. I did consider either an older electribe or a mc-303 but I feel just holding out for an ESX-1 would be better. It seems more versatile.

Look into an arduinoboy. You can get a kit or a preassembled one here: http://xiwielectronics.com/collections/all
I think that is what you are looking for.

Alright, I think I'm set on getting an ESX-1. I just wanted to come here and see if anybody had complaints about them or knew of any better alternatives. I did look at the mc-303 and it looks useful but I think I could use an electribe better. I'm hoping that I can get one used for a little cheaper than normal...

The ESX-1 attracts me with its ability to use samples. I don't want anything that is too simple and something that is easy to work with live. Also, if I'm using this to make a lot of beats I would like to be able to save them in some way and I'm pretty sure I can't do that on the Volca Beats.

Auxcide does.
An electribe?
And can you point me to an example track of you using the mc-303, jefftheworld?

I know I could use a DAW but my goal is to have all hardware and not rely on a computer. I know about the Korg Volcas. I'm just concerned that I'll be limited with what I can do with that. Do you think that you'll get one AC? Do you guys know of any other alternatives?

Thanks so much for the positive feedback! And thanks upKori for saying you'll share it with people! I don't know much people who would hear it otherwise.4

I've been thinking about adding some kind of drum machine alongside LSDJ. Does anybody do this with an electribe or something similar? I'd like to here what you guys use.
