I agree with basspuddle, put a resistor on the backlight and see if it works.

could very well be the case, some of the pokemon carts have some extra hardware on them

GUYS I SOLVED IT
I desoldered the backlight wires and replaced the resistor. I then re-soldered onto some alternative ground/+5v points and voila!
This is after searching through a pile of 500 1/4watt resistors to find a 68 ohm one...
