Where do you usually start in a new song? Drums? Bass? A nice lead?
yea im just looking for a hook I can make the song around. Sometimes its a cool drum pattern, a cool bass, whatever.
Roll a 4 sided die, now you know what channel to start with.
Depends on what you're in the mood for. Makin' beats? Start with drum and bass. Makin' sweet melodies/arps? start there.
It doesn't really matter. you just need to start, the rest takes care of itself.
Edit*: The non-literal "you".... not you you. *shrug* general advice/my thing.

What I do is I start out with an idea for a lead, then I set down a rhythm that would fit what's in my head, then I fill in the spaces between. Either that or I go straight for the "everything" package that starts with rhythm and ends with a blood-covered mixer.
whatever floats your boat tho
I like good melodies so I tend to start with that, but I find having to add a bass later on is much more difficult. As opposed to adding a lead to an already existent bass.
I usually start with an empty song. And I stop when it's finished.

Usually a good strategy.

This is described as a finite process, but in reality you never stop.
