I am having a bit of an issue with FM and automation. I love the sound of a slight amount of frequency shift (pitch bend but in S channel,) but when I use it, I get an ungodly crackling sound. Is there any way to circumvent this or fix it?
No, that's how it sounds when you change samples during playback without interpolation.
(the "FM" in nanoloop is wavetables of FM waveforms)
Although...The crackling is quite severe in that recording... But it sounds like that only when modulating the tone of the FM sounds, right?

yeah, it doesn't happen when it's just flat, only when I'm modulating
one way around it, is to use the modulation speed/crackle in a way that it fits the rhythmic part of your pattern.
then they become something extra.
Add some crackle to the beginning of the track to make it sound like it's a phonograph record. That way the listening ear hears the crackles in a more artistic context
