I have started working on an orchestra/RPG soundtrack using only the Sega Genesis soundchip. A lot of interesting stuff you can do with it. I hope to be able to stick the whole soundtrack within a 32 Megabit cartridge that would work on any Sega Genesis. It would take very efficient usage of samples. I normally abuse the DAC/PCM channel, though. 
Wow, that sounds like quite the undertaking. It must take some patience and skill to be able to manipulate the sounds to have that orchestral "feel" from that hardware. How far are you going to be able to push the chip? Sounds like an awesome project!
